Most kids will start orthodontic treatment in their teens, unless the orthodontist detects an issue that needs early treatment. By the age of 11 or 12, most kids will have lost all their baby teeth, and all their adult teeth will be in place. While teens are still growing, it is easier to correct problems such as crowding, spacing, overbites, crossbites, and more. Take a look at our gallery to see our smile transformations!
Why Should Teens Get Orthodontic Treatment?
Gain confidence for a lifetime. Your teenager deserves to smile and laugh without hiding their teeth. Research also shows that people with straighter teeth are more likely to get hired!
Set them up for better health. Crooked teeth are harder to brush, floss, and keep clean. This may predispose your teen for gum disease (swollen, red, inflamed gums). A bad bite will wear away teeth faster. Also, crooked teeth will only get more crooked over time. Teen orthodontic treatment will straighten their teeth at an earlier age, which will allow teeth to be easier to take care of as they age.
Treatment is shorter. Teeth move faster & teens are still growing, so teen orthodontic treatment is shorter than in adults. In addition, because teens are growing, the orthodontist can take advantage of growth to fix certain bites faster (such as an overbite). There are also certain treatments that can only be done in growing children.
Either braces or clear aligners are options for teenagers. Now more than ever, clear aligners like Invisalign are good options for responsible teens. Most teenagers qualify for both options. The pros & cons can be discussed at your initial exam.
Insurance coverage. Many dental insurances do not cover adult treatment, but will provide generous coverage for kids and teens.
